A recent study was released regarding the home value increase associated with installing a solar photovoltaic system. (click here). The results show that the value increased by an average of $5.50 per installed DC watt of solar modules. The range was from $3.90 to $6.40 per watt. A typical installe system cost after the 30% federal tax credit is between $4 and $5 per watt. So when you consider the payback analysis of a solar system, you must consider the added amount that it increases your home's value. In Kansas, there is no real estate taxes on renewable energy systems, so you would be increasing the value of your home like a room addition or a bathroom remodel without owing tax on the increased value(go to www.dsireusa.org and click on Kansas). The time to recoup your investment by installing a system could be immediate considering the value added to your property. At the high end of the range of this study, your payback would still only be 5 years or less. We can walk you through the numbers if you are interested.
